The Oklahoma City Zoo is excited to share details about this year’s Dr Pepper Vending Machine Art Contest. Oklahoma students in grades K-12 are eligible to win wild prizes and the chance to have their original art design on a Dr Pepper machine at the OKC Zoo for an entire year! This year’s theme, “A Future for Pollinators”, challenges students to share their creativity and love of nature to show a future safe for butterflies, bees and other species that perform the critical role of pollinating plants in nature. Black History Month Did You Know… The United States Armed Forces were segregated from the End of Slavery until Executive Order 9981 was issued on July 26, 1948, by President Harry S. Truman. It abolished discrimination "on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin" in the United States Armed Forces. The executive order eventually led to the end of segregation in the services. Prior to desegregation our United States Military had many all-black units that served this country with distinction. In this spotlight we are going to focus on two highly decorated groups. The 9th & 10th Calvary “Buffalo Soldiers” and the 332nd Air Squadron or Tuskegee Airmen. These troops fought many battles to protect rights that they themselves did not get to fully enjoy. There has been much made of where the term”Buffalo Soldier” originated but it has become the term used for the US Army units that trace their lineage back to the All-Black 9th and 10th Calvary units, whose service earned them an honored place in History. The Buffalo Soldiers spent time in Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and Texas. They pursed Victorio and Nana and other Apache warriors during Victorio’s War. They also fought in the Ghost Dance War and the Wounded Creek Massacre. They were also used to remove SOONERS from native lands in the 1880’s and 1890’s. A total of 23 Buffalo Solidiers received Congressional Medals of Honor during the Indian Wars. These All black Calvary Units continued to serve the US Military through conflicts around the World until the Horse Calvary was disbanded in 1951. The Tuskegee Airmen is the popular name of agroup of African American military pilots who fought in World War II. They were the first African American military aviators in the United States Armed forces. The Tuskegee Airmen’s first Combat Assignment was in North Africa where it received a Distinguished Unit Citation. They were then assigned to mainland Italy. In Italy they escorted Heavy Bombers on Bombing Raids into Hungary, Austria, Czechloslavakia, Poland and Germany. The quickly won the admiration of the Bomber pilots who referred to them as Red Tails because of their distinctive plane markings The Tuskegee Airmen are credited with the following accomplishments and awards: • 1578 Combat Missions • 179 Bomber Escort missions , losing bombers only on 7 missions • 112 enemy aircraft destroyed in the air • 950 rail cars, trucks and other motor vehicles destroyed • One destroyer put out of action • 40 other boats and barges destroyed • Received the Distinguished Unit Citation on 3 separate occasions • One Silver Star • 96 Distinguished Flying Crosses • 14 Bronze stars • 744 Air Medals • And 8 purple hearts

Black History Month Did You Know… Being handpicked to be one of three black students to integrate West Virginia’s graduate schools is something that many would consider one of their life’s most notable moments, but it is just one of several breakthroughs that have marked Katherine Johnson’s Life. **Her intense curiosity and brilliance with numbers allowed her to move ahead several grades in school ** She was attending high school at age of 13 at West Viriginia state College ** Graduated from West Virginia State College in 1937 and took a job teaching at a black public school in Virginia ** West Virginia State University president John Davis selected her and two male students as the first black students to attend West Virginia University’s graduate school in 1939. **1953 She took position at the all-black West Area Computing section at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics(NACA) Langley Laboratory. She was assigned to a project in the Maneuver Loads Branch of the Flight Research Division. She spent 4 years analyzing data from flight tests and worked on t the investigation of a plane crash caused by wake turbulence ** 1957 Launch of the Soviet Sputnik Satellite changed History and Katherine Johnson’s Life ** The NACA groups (becomes NASA) she worked with began their foray in space travel and Katherine went with them. She did trajectory analysis for Alan Shepard’s May 1961 Freedom 7 mission. This was America’s first human spaceflight. ** In 1960 she coauthored a research report. It was the first time a woman in the Flight Research division had received credit as an author. **in 1962 as NASA prepared for the orbital mission of John Glenn, Katherine Johnson was called upon to do the work she would become most known for. **As part of the preflight checklist, Glenn asked the engineers to have Katherine Johnson run the same numbers and equations that had been programmed into the computer, but by hand. If she says they are good,” Katherine remembers the astronaut saying,”then I am ready to go.” Glenn’s flight was a success. Katherine Johnson Retired from NASA in 1986

Very excited to announce that we have a very special Black History Month Assembly scheduled for Monday, February 25 at 9:30 am in High School Commons.

Black History Month Did You Know… The Greenwood District of Tulsa is a historic Freedom Colony. As one of the most prominent concentrations of African American businesses in the United States during the early 20th Century, it was popularly known as “America’s Black Wall Street”. This area contained numerous expensive houses belonging to Doctor’s, lawyers and business owners. The buildings on Greenwood Avenue housed the offices of almost all of Tulsa’s Black Lawyers, realtors, doctors and other professionals. Greenwood had some of the most successful black owned businesses. Greenwood was home to over 15 well know African American Physicians, including Dr. A.C. Jackson who was considered one of the most able Negro surgeons by one of the Mayo Brothers. Greenwood was home to not only one but two major Newspapers, The Tulsa Star and the Oklahoma Sun. Black Wall Street flourished until the Tulsa Race Riots of 1921. During this riot 100’s of African Americans were killed and 10000 left homeless as 35 square blocks of homes and businesses were torched and fire bombed by mobs of angry whites. This massacre has been omitted from state and local records and was rarely mentioned in history books until recently. ‘ The community mobilized its resources and rebuilt the Greenwood area within 5 years of the Tulsa Race Riots.
